Winamp has been around longer than most software audio player.
Winamp supports MP3, CD audio and some other audio types.
It comes as a free plug-in for Netscape browser or you can
download it separately. Winamp is easy to use and has over
10 000 changeable skin interfaces and 150 audio visualizations.
Winamp is also packed with many features such as ID3 tag editor,
play lists internet radio, mp3 decoding so that you can convert
MP3s to audio CDs and much more. Overall, Winamp is a
simple player with some very useful features that makes it
a worthy download.

the Sonique music distribution site. It also has a complete
set of audio controls (20 band equalizer, balance, pitch adjustment
etc). On the downside, there's no built-in way to categorize
your music files under headings such as Album, Artist, and
Genre.

WMP includes ten-band equalizer,
radio tuner, supports skins and cool visualizations. Another
cool feature is its SRS WOW Effects that lets you easily add
more low-frequency audio ("TruBass") and ambiance (WOW Effect)
to your music. However, WMP doesn't lets you save your
CD tracks as .wav files and won't record MP3 files.
Its only format option is the wma format and
it lacks an auto-playlist feature. Overall,
Windows Media Player has some useful features but lacks
support for a common open standard.
Updates:
Microsoft has released a free Bonus Pack includes an MP3 converter
to WMA, new skins and visualizations, and a tool to convert
Winamp skins into Windows Media Player skins. You can download
it from WindowsMedia.com.
